Offering H1N1 and Seasonal Flu Vaccine Clinic

Lewis County Public Health will be offering the last 2009 public seasonal flu vaccine and H1N1 clinic for Lewis County residents on Thursday, December 17, 2009 from 2 pm to 6 pm at the Lowville Fire Hall.

H1N1 Vaccine
Although the New York State Department of Health has lifted the restrictions on vaccine distribution, in Lewis County many individuals who are at high risk for complications have not yet received the H1N1vaccine. Therefore, we encourage anyone who is in a “priority group” as determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to come to this clinic. People who are not in a priority group may also come to this clinic.
These are the priority groups that had been previously identified by the CDC for H1N1 vaccine:

  • Pregnant women

  • Household contacts and caregivers for children younger than 6 months of age

  • Health care and emergency medical services workers

  • All people from 6 months through 24 years of age

  • People aged 25 through 64 years who have health conditions associated with higher risk of serious illness and medical complications from the flu.

Seasonal Flu Vaccine
The CDC recommends the seasonal flu for all children 6 months to 18 years of age. For the 2009 flu season, CDC has recommended that the following individuals get a seasonal flu vaccine:

  • People 50 years old and older

  • All children 6 months to 18 years

  • Residents of long-term care facilities

  • People with medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, kidney problems, cancer or blood disorders

  • People with certain disorders such as stroke and seizure disorders that increase the risk of fluid getting into the lungs.

  • People with a weakened immune system

  • Women who will be pregnant during flu season (late fall through early spring)

  • An annual flu vaccine is also recommended for anyone who lives or cares for people who are at high risk for flu complications. This includes:

    • Health care providers (employees at hospitals, long-term care facilities and home care providers.)

    • Household contacts and caregivers of children under 5 years old or adults over 50. This is especially important for caregivers of children under 6 months of age, since young infants are too young to receive the vaccine themselves.

    • People who live with or care for children or adults with chronic medical conditions.

Flu vaccine is also recommended for anyone who wants to reduce their risk of becoming ill with seasonal influenza and spreading it to others.

Payment that will be accepted for the seasonal flu vaccine includes: Medicare Part B, cash or check. POMCO will be accepted for any Jeff-Lewis BOCES school district employees . The cost is $45 for an adult flu shot and $60 for a pneumonia shot. For children through the age of 18, there is no charge for seasonal flu vaccine. However, no one will be turned away due to his or her inability to pay. There is no charge for the H1N1 vaccine.
