CONSERVE
WATER NOTICE/
PRECAUTIONARY BOIL WATER ADVISORY
A Message from the Village of Copenhagen
POSTED ON
August 24, 2010
CUSTOMERS OF THE VILLAGE OF COPENHAGEN ARE HEREBY ADVISED BY THE NYS
DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH - WATERTOWN DISTRICT OFFICE TO BOIL WATER FOR
DRINKING PURPOSES AND TO REDUCE WATER USAGE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
A drinking water standard was violated. Your water is routinely
monitored for turbidity (cloudiness) to determine if it is effectively
being filtered. Recent water samples have exceeded the turbidity standard
of 0.3 turbidity units. Because of these high levels of turbidity, there
is an increased chance that the water may contain disease-causing
organisms.
The wells alone cannot meet the Village demand due to drought impact and
mechanical problems so residents are asked to minimize all water usage.
Residents are advised not to drink the water without boiling it first.
Bring all water to a one minute rolling boil, and let it cool before
using, or use bottled water certified for sale by the NYS Department of
Health. Boiled or bottled water usage is advised for drinking and food
preparation until further notice.
Turbidity has no health effects. However, turbidity can interfere with
disinfection and provide a medium for microbial growth. Turbidity may
indicate the presence of disease causing organisms. These organisms
include bacteria, viruses, and parasites, which can cause symptoms such as
nausea, cramps, diarrhea, and associated headaches.
The symptoms above are not just caused by organisms in drinking water. If
you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to
seek medical advice. People with severely compromised immune systems,
infants, and some elderly may be at increased risk. These people should
seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers.
What happened? What is being done?
The filters at the water treatment plant are being optimized to prevent
turbidity exceedences and the continuous monitoring equipment is
undergoing repair. The wells are being evaluated for greater output
(flow). You will be informed when the precautionary boil water advisory
and conserve water notice are lifted.
For more information, please contact Mr. Kevin Muncie of the Village of
Copenhagen at 688-4229 or the NYS Department of Health, Watertown District
Office, at (315) 785-2277.
Please share this information with all the other people who drink this
water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly
(for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and
businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or
distributing copies by hand or mail.
